Bulk Grain buy?

Postby thebuddrik » Wed Nov 18, 2009 5:33 am

How are you guys doing on grain? I wouldn't mind to get everyone thinking about a bulk grain buy.

Asked the redstick guys, unfortunately, they had enough business on their end to fill up the pallet by themselves, so they didn't invite others. They just got the grains in 2 weeks ago.

They did say that they will probably order again toward the end of February.

That sort of leaves us on our own.

But lets get a tally of who is interested anyway. The difference in shipping a full pallet vs a half pallet is $5 bucks per sack in shipping. A full pallet holds 40 sacks.

I'm getting low on a few things, so I need 4 sacks.

On second thought, maybe not...

How soon would you guys do this? I'll be passing through Lafayette on my way to BR December 11th. If you'll have it in by then maybe my club could help fill out the pallet and I could pick it up that weekend. Just a thought, no big deal either way.

I'm in for at least 1 sack, maybe 2 or 3, I need to check my inventory, it's a few hundred miles away right now though.

Here it is.

http://www.countrymaltgroup.com/pricing/MC_SalesBook.pdf

Price is per pound, but sold by the sack, so take the price for < 1000 lbs and multiply by 55 for most prices. Some sacks are 50 lb I believe, but they charge less for them.

I personally like the Franco-Belges malts, and if you check the current prices, it comes out something like this: Pilsen $35.65 for the sack, $35.20 for Munich. With a full pallet, add 5 bucks for shipping, 1/2 pallet add 10 bucks per sack. Still, 45 bucks for belgian Plisen is a great price. But you can also get canadian malting pilsen for $28.05 per sack if your not particular.

Roughly $200 bucks to ship a pallet to LA, anything from 4 sacks to 40 sacks costs basically the same to ship.

Hey all,

I'm new to this board, and this subject caught my eye. I'm pretty sure my DYS membership lapsed. I didn't participate when I was in the group - work, family, etc. Anyway, I was wondering if I could still participate in a bulk grain buy. The prices are great, and I could use two or three sacks.

Okay, my math is a little rusty, but here goes.
two sacks T101 Maris Otter ($40.15 ea.), and
four sacks T105 Pearl ($39.60 ea.), and
three sacks F101 Pilsen ($34.65 ea.), and
one sack of F601 Malted wheat ($36.30 ea.),
comes to about $380.05 plus S&H.
So if we can do at least 20 sacks, and my math is right, that's no more than $500. If we can't get at least 20 sacks, cancel my order.
I would appreciate it if someone would double check my figures.

Alright Aleguy, I'm in for at least 2 sacks, probably one pale and one pilsen.
I'll nail it down when we're ready to confirm the order.
I think we should wait and ask at the next meeting if anyone is insterested, hopefully I can make that one.

That's fine with me. I just want to get this thing rolling again. I'm out of grain and I want to brew.

I'm in for 4. Also, I believe we need at least another 2 sacks for club property (the stuff we use on teach a friend and demo days). That should boost us up to 19 sacks so far.

I need:
2 sack GP - OIO-RW1 - Unmalted Wheat $0.45/lb
1 sack CMC - 4074 - Wheat Malt $0.49/lb
1 sack CMC - 2006 - 6 row - $0.49/lb

I suggest for the club grains:
2 sack CMC 2002 - 2 row $0.49/lb

We can turn that into just about anything with a few specialty malts.

Using the high side of everyones commitment, that currently puts us at:

4 sacks - Yeastmeister
2 sacks - Club
4 sacks -Budrockdeisel
1 sack - Redtail28
2 sacks - 0006
10 sacks - aleguy

Total so far:
23 sacks

After next meeting, I will shoot this over to the Baton Rouge guys and see if they want to finish up the pallet, that way its cheaper shipping for everyone.
