Join the Brew Scouts and drink in the world

Postby aleguy » Mon Mar 30, 2009 4:31 pm

The Brew Scouts is an organization dedicated to furthering the interests of home brewers. Through a series of technical challenges, brew scouts develop skills that will serve them through their brewing life. Each step along the path from novice to expert is provided along with technical assistance from other Brew Scouts.
The Brew Scouts live by the motto: Sanitation, Fermentation and Carbonation.

Here is where we will get the badges. We can add different names to such. I need to get cracking on this. I've already come up with the Oath but still working on the Law.

Great idea. If you want to set up a satelite troop let us know.

Okay, I saw two or three badges we might be able to use. I didn't think anyone was taking this too seriously. I guess it just goes to show that not all the ideas you come up with when you're drunk are bad ones.
It just seems like people are putting a lot more effort into this than I expected. I figured Gene would put up some goofy home page and it would sort of be a running joke.
I'm still working on my brewstand building merit badge. Maybe we should use the dumpster diving patch for that, but it doesn't really fit too well.
Is there a way to personalize those things? Or are we just kind of stuck with the generic patches? The Boy scouts have patches that are individualized to troops and such, is it that expensive to do?

Error 403, yep, like I said, website is ours, but no content uploaded yet. I hate under construction pages. I'd rather show nothing than something not ready. No worries, I'm in control of it.

Absolutely. Especially since you seem to have a talented artist brewing with yall. We are troop number 1, I guess that would make you guys troop number 2. Once we put the site up, I expect lots of participation from clubs after I post the link on TBN.

Was looking for a wombat patrol patch, but the closest they have is platypus. Damn!
Go troop 1! Wombats rule!
Or, er, um, something like that . . .

The only problem with getting personalized patches is that they cost to much and we have to order a shit load of them. We may have to hold off on such extreme brewing badges as Brew Stands but we can keep working on others.

Ok, here's my Oath:

On my honor I will brew my best
to do my duty to grain and hops
and to obey the Brew Scout Law;
To help others brew at all times;
To keep myself physically capable of lifting my kegs,
mentally sober, and morally responsible.

I still need help with a few more laws in the Brew Scout Law.

A Brew Scout is educated, helpful, sanitary, patient,
experimental, creative, legal (I need 4 more here)
and somewhat sober.

I don't like the sober parts, and I think we could run into issues if we copy the scouts too closely. Merit badges and the name brew scouts is pushing it already. But if we have to have an oath, you need to take out the sober parts, because most, if not all, of us will not be able to uphold it. Especially on a brew day. The lifting kegs thing should be changed to lifting a glass so as not to discriminate against the disabled or drunken.

I don't know, I like the bit about "somewhat sober" and mentally sober. To me it means we are not absolutely shit face drunk all the time. Let the scouts come after us, this is parody.

I don't know about wombat, but they have a fun "lawn chair" or crawfish or even the pacman.

I know a few people with embroidery machines, so we could probably do custom badges on a small scale. I'll see if they are willing and what it would cost for materials. Just come up with a jpg picture (or tell us what you want, we have to graphic artists in our club) and we can convert it and run them. We're actually going to get some patches made with our club logo and embroider some polo shirts for comps when the logo is finished. I can't impose to provide for the world though if you post this on TBN.

Are you also going to come up with rules on how to qualify for each badge? I'd hate to see people just getting badges and making a mockery of this mockery! I see that it was a drunken idea, but I like it. Could be a lot of fun to see people with sashes full of badges running around comps and conferences. Don't forget the BN badge.
