Happy birthday to me

Postby thebuddrik » Sat Nov 22, 2008 3:22 pm

I just picked up an old keg fridge form my grandmothers house. This thing is over 20 years old and when I plugged it in it still works! It still needs a lot of cleaning up but I am very happy. :D :D

I will use it for a fermentation cooler for now. I will try to find a controller. I hope I can figure out a way to fit 2 carboys in there.

This was in it. I will save the bottle until I start kegging. I would like to turn the keg into a boil pot. Do you guys know if this old one would work for that?

What is that plastic port and what will I have to do to it?

Nice! What you have there is an old Hoff Stevens keg. Found this that looks like what you want to do:

Check here for parts if you actually want to serve beer from that keg:

I doubt you will be able to get 2 carboys in there, but you should definitely be able to get 2 cornies. I ferment in cornies myself for that exact reason. I can fit 2 of them in my fermentation fridge.

Granny bought that to keep Gramps out of the bars.

The fridge is at my pops place and all of my equipment is in Lafayette but I took measurments and I think I will be able to fit two carboys.

Do you guys have any idea of how much I could get if I bring in this keg to a distrubiter? And also where I could get a sanky keg? If it will be too much of a pain I will just chop this one.

I doubt any distributor would take a hoff-stevens keg. No one uses them anymore. No handles, etc. Sankey kegs are either very expensive to purchase legally or illegal. You could try a scrap metal dealer or just go to Sabco. There are better deals out there but you have to hunt around and be patient. Most people just find theirs abandoned or otherwise illegally obtain them. I don't recommend this, but it is the most common option.

It might be more useful as a fermentation vessel. drill out the bunghole on the side and build a cradle to hold it. put an airlock in the bunghole and you can ferment a tenb-gallon batch in one vessel instead of breaking it up.
