Sub for Crystal 15

Postby triple-oh_six » Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:27 pm

I'm brewing a blonde ale from Jamil's book that calls for .92 lbs crystal 15

I only have crystal 60.

Should I use the 60 and cut down the amount some.

Also, I have some cara-pils that I was thinking of adding anyway that is 10-20L. Should I add the carapils andforget the crystal all together.

Any help would be great, thanks guys,

Hmmmm....tricky. You could use 1/4 the amount in Crystal 60, to extract the approximate amount of color, but your not going to get the residual sweetness using that little. You would also need to add some maltodextrin to get the that back.

I believe you want the cara red or cara amber. That is as close as you can get. I don't think I've ever seen any crystal rated below 60. Just cara malts.

I know I'm late but I bought a half sack cyrstal 30-40 light munich would give a light caramel flavor with out the sweetness of the crystal.
