Bulk hops

Postby aleguy » Sun May 10, 2009 4:52 pm

I know many of you guys buy bulk hops by the pound, etc. I'm wondering if there's a specific outlet that you buy from. I've been looking for some hops but can only find them by the ounce (with limits on quantity) in pellets or 2-ounce whole cone.
Freshops doesn't have what I'm looking for. Neither does Midwest. Austin Homebrew is out of stock until next year. Who said the hops shortage was over? Oh yeah. He quit the club.
Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, but they don't have them either.

Horizon. I've only found it by the ounce. Midwest has a limit of 3 oz.

Got to agree. I can only find them in limited quantities. Order multiple orders from midwest seems to be the best bet.

If you can find enough people to go in with you, you can get it in a 5 lb. bulk at Nikobrew.

Very reasonable shipping, too.

Cheers,

Thanks, Guitarlord. I looked there, but didn't think to look in the 5-11 lb section. I wish I could afford it. Anyone want to go in on a 5lb bag? 1lb each maybe? Probably not.

+1 on HopDirect. North Country Malt (http://www.northcountrymalt.com/pages.p ... &menu=true) also has decent prices and charges actual FedEx shipping, and the new guy Niko's Homebrew Supply (http://www.nikobrew.com/) has good prices and charges $5 flat-rate shipping. Neither one has Horizon, but the chart that I sent you suggests Magnum as a substitute. Both have Magnum at around $25/lb so Niko would be your best bet. You also get a discount at checkout using the coupon code "bnarmy", but I don't know how much the discount is. They also sell 5lb and 11lb bags if you guys want to do group buys.

Thanks.Magnum is a little too high in cohumulone fro me.I was actually considering Simcoe TM, but the pine like aroma has me concerned. I don't know how much of that will come through. Glacier looks very good as a low-cohumulone hop, but the alphas are so low, it would take a lot for an IPA.

I thought I had replied to this, I was going to suggest Niko as well.
Let me know, I might be insterested in buying some in bulk.

How many pounds did you want? Niko's only has Horizon in 5-lb bags. I can only afford about 1lb myself, so that leaves four lbs unspoken for.

Nikobrew has Horizon by the ounce and pound now. Don't know if you're still interested or not.

Cheers,
Dave
