You know it's time to change you star san when . . .

You know it's time to change your star san when:
you open the bucket and a cloud of mosquitos swarms out.
You find tadpoles in it.
It has a thick, green pellicle of algae.
It has a thick, black pellicle of mold.
Something grabs you and tries to pull you in.

It's all normal for the end of the useful life of Star San. Barring a ph test, it's handy to have a few rules of thumb to know when you should make some up fresh.
