Green bottles?

Postby thebuddrik » Tue Oct 28, 2008 9:10 am

What is the purpose of green and clear bottles? I know that the browns are to keep out sunlight. Why would you want to allow sunlight to get to your beer? Is it for a perticular style?
Thanks,
Buddy

Amber (brown) bottles keep out the ultraviolet light that skunks beer.
The light causes the lupulin from the hops to create the same chemical that skunks produce, Mercaptin.
Green and clear bottles do not give this same protection.
I use green grolcshe bottles all the time, I make sure to keep them in a closed box to sheild them from the light.
You can also cover them w/ a towel in the fridge, but that could be a problem for more than a few beers.
I wouldn't use anything but amber bottles for competitions either.

As far as style goes, you've had Heineken I'm sure.

Green bottles are fine for unhopped beers or beers that never leave the dark. If you think of them as vampires that will be destroyed if they ever see the light, you'll be okay.
Leave the clear bottles for soda pop.

Very appropriate for the season. Actually, I used to make my pumpkin ale and specifically bottle it in green bottles. I just thought it was more to theme, an orange beer coming out of a green bottle just kept the pumpkin theme going....

I like putting meads in clear bottles, but in a mead, clarity is very important, so its nice to show it off.

I keep all the bottles in the dark, no matter what their color however.
