if you're talking about sales tax. no. everyone has to pay (as far as I know,) but non-profit status give a group certain advantages in the form of income and property taxes etc.
Basically there's probably no legal way to get around sales tax, but that's only the tip of the proverbial.
If we were to attempt to start a capital fund, we would need to protect our assets. However if we are only raising money for club equipment and parties, etc. then we only need concern ourselves with keeping the sales tax people off our backs. Maybe we should only have fundraisers on "tax-free weekend."

OK let me start over, the state does not recognize ANY non-profit organization at all, that is money made from fund raisers that is money made for a club or whatever from the sale of anything you have to pay sales tax on it, BUT you can get out of paying sales tax, if you have a not for profit organization ( our club ) to get out of paying sales tax on things sold for fund raising you need to fill out LA. Dept. of Revenue form 1048 and submitting it a max of 2 weeks before the event to get approval for the fund raising event to get out of paying sales tax. I talked to a real nice lady who is charge of sales tax division for the LA. DOR and found out everything about this subject. We can sell shirts, food pretty much what we want sales tax free, it will be part of the club treasurer's job to fill out and submit this form for club fund raisers, and keep records about such in-case we are audited if the change to the club bylaws is passed. but there is a very small chance of that since our club revenues are so small. Go back to previous page and look at the form it is pretty much self explanatory. ok is it clear now :D
