Club Business
ACA was not able to apply for the Homebrew Special Event Permit for serving homebrew at this years Gulf Brew (October 19, 2013). Additionally, the ATC is verbally saying the permit is only for retailers and not applicable for Special Events. So we are not going to be able to serve homebrew at Gulf Brew this year. If triple-oh_6 (James) still wants too, I'm sure we could brew at Gulf Brew, and we volunteered triple-oh_6 (since he was not present) to spread the word (e.g., fliers, etc.) at Gulf Brew regarding the reasons why there is no homebrew at this years Gulf Brew. There is a thread on the forum for Q&A at - Gulf Brew 2013. I don't really feel like rehashing all the BS.

Tattoo-mama (Sarah) and Brewmeis (Chris) are working on organizing a Booze Cruise, may be this November or December. It is planned to be a local pub crawl and / or stops at homebrewers homes. They need to get a rough estimate of who would like to go or host a stop, and asking for people to think about it and let them know by PM or at the next meeting. In the future, we would like to plan another Booze Cruise to do brewery tours or something similar.

Last Sept 7, those interested meet to organize the 2014 DYS Competition. During this months club meeting, we discussed the result of this meeting and approved the competition as the following:

Name: Battaille des Bieres presented by DYS.
Date: Entry Deadline - January 25, 2014; Event and Final Judging - February 8, 2014.
Styles: BJCP Categories - 6. Light Hybrid Ale, 10. American Ale, 13. Stout, and 14. IPA.
Entries: No late entries; Going to setup local drop off locations in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Alexandria etc; Entries completed online.
Judging: February 1 and 8, 2014; Will be registered with the BJCP and will get registered judges list from them.
Advertisement: Flier / Poster (Jim B. is going to work on one); Local sponsor locations (Marcello's, Green Room, etc.), Independent; tee shirt.
Sponsors: Have list from previous years and splitting contacts among several of us.

We will have the competition announcement post up on the forum and register it with the BJCP this week. Anyone that wants to help organize or volunteer at the competition is still welcome and din't have to be present at the first meeting. We are checking to see about teaming up with a sponsor (Blue Moon Saloon) for after judging entertainment. Please see the forum thread for more info or post input if you can not make it.

We are brewing at Marcello's on November 2, 2013 for Learn to Homebrew Day. We will be brewing an all-grain beer and an extract kit. It is a perfect time for beginner brewers to learn how to do an extract beer and see how easy it is to jump to all-grain brewing. Additionally, anyone is welcome to bring their brewing system (RIMS, cooler, etc.) and brewing equipment to brew on and show. Please post on the forum thread if anyone wants to brew, cook (grill or smoke), etc. Normally we have some beers to help with the brewing and to go with the food. People are welcome to bring any beers or food they would like to share. It is club tradition to do a People's Choice Award for the best Pumpkin Ale during the Learn to Homebrew Day. So, start thinking about brewing your Pumpkin Ale. Pie pumpkins should be come available soon (September) or use canned pumpkin (beware of the spiced canned pumpkin and stuck mashes).

Cajun Brewing has some individual 0.5 and 1 lb sacks of German Hallentau hops to give away. Details can be found on the DYS Forum.

Other Business
A reminder that Roberts Cove Germanfest is happening this October 5 and 6, 2013. They will be announcing the winners of the their homebrew competition on Saturday at the festival.

Several of us are going to Black Pot Festival and will be hanging out with beer and food. Hope to see some club members there.

Mostly just discussed the Gulf Brew situation and the club competition.

Style of the Month
Category 14 — India Pale Ale (IPA).
Marcello’s provided the following beers:

St. Peter's Brewery Co Ltd - India Pale Ale (14A. English IPA)
Redhook Ale Brewery - Long Hammer IPA (14B. American IPA)
Stone Brewing Co. -IPA (14B. American IPA)
New Belgium Brewing - Ranger (14B. American IPA) - we thought this it was more English IPA due to the biscuit-like flavor but NBB says American IPA with american hops.
Goose Island Beer Co. - India Pale Ale (14B. American IPA)
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. - Torpedo Extra IPA (14C. Imperial IPA)

Descriptions of all the BJCP beer styles can be found on the BJCP website.
